Chapter Twelve

Two hours later, I’m sitting in my office, trying to puzzle out my next step, and working on my third knitted baby blanket for Cora, which is still far from being finished, when I get a text.

I finish the row I’m on, so I don’t lose track of where I am, and then set the project down on my desk and pick up my phone.

The text is from Marley.

‘Another warlock is here!’ it says.

And that’s it.

I immediately text back. ‘Which one? When did he get here? Where are you now?’

No response.

Feeling unsettled, I pick up my knitting and manage to get two more rows done, despite my distracted state, when finally, my phone beeps. I’ve only waited a few minutes for Marley’s response, but it felt like hours.

I read the text quickly. ‘It’s Flicka... only he goes by FJ now. We’re up at the mine together. I’m going to set up a tent for him here. Where’s Rumple?’

‘Off on a hike with his new best friend Turkey,’ I type. ‘It’s a long story. Turkey will let us know if they head back to town anytime soon, but I have a feeling they’ll be occupied all day.’

‘Great! Want to come up and talk to Flicka? We can interrogate him together. I’ll cook up some food. I bet he’ll be more willing to talk if we feed him...’

I smile. Marley is always up for an adventure. She’s my best partner in crime fighting.

“Be right there,” I text. Then I hurriedly toss my knitting project back into the tote bag where I keep all of my knitting supplies, grab my messenger bag, and head out the door.

Within fifteen sweaty minutes I’m coasting to a stop in front of Marley’s van. She has music going, of course, and a grill set up. Her familiar Skili is perched on one camp chair, while a man with bright orange hair, wearing a bowling shirt is seated in the other. Marley is hovering over her grill, dancing along to the music as she grills up lunch. Probably tofu dogs, knowing Marley.

“Hi!” I say, trying to sound casual. I hop off my bike and prop it up with the kickstand. “You must be in town for the wedding! I’m Penny Banks.” I make my way to Flicka and extend my hand.

Flicka hoists himself out of the camp chair—not an easy task seeing as it’s not the sturdiest piece of furniture in the world—and accepts my handshake. I see two chains around his neck. One is thin, with a silver medallion attached, just like the other Coven of Murdock necklaces that I’m starting to know so well.

I take the fact that at least Rumple and Flicka are still wearing their necklaces as a good sign. Maybe they want to get the coven back together and sing more than they’re letting on. I know they’ve put on an outward show of breaking apart and staying apart, and even moving on entirely from their magical work, but what’s going on
